《纽约街道时钟》并非孤立的灵感,而是 Kolman 整个创作逻辑的一个节点。他的《第一道光》寻找被计算机发现却从未被人类目光触及的星星——天文数据集中的未见余项;他的《MNIST 历史》追踪1989年为机器学习提供手写样本的三千五百名普通人,在最经典的训练数据库里寻找被抹去的个体余项;《交通摄像头照相亭》发现了城市监控基础设施中未被官方利用的个人表达空间。一致的方法论是:任何系统在完成其指定功能之后,总会留下某种剩余物。Kolman 的工作是收集这些剩余物,并让它们重新变得可见。

At 1:16 PM, it shows the M116 bus caught mid-route by Google Street View; at 6:50 PM, a halal food stand with a "$6.50" price sign; past midnight, the awning of the jewelry store at 1204 Broadway. None of these images were taken to show the time. The bus number is a transit designation, the price a market rate, the address a postal coordinate. Kolman and Zhao's scripts scanned over 20,000 Street View captures of New York City and extracted the numbers that—at some moment in the day—happen to match the current time, assembling them into a running clock.
To understand why this is beautiful in the SAE sense—余项之美, the beauty of the remainder—begin with the two constructs it works against. The first is Google Street View itself: the most comprehensive spatial document of the city ever assembled, billions of images that index every surface of human habitation. The chisel-construct cycle of Street View is complete. The second construct is the digital clock: a form so thoroughly optimized—analog, digital, LED, atomic—that there is nothing left to discover about it as a form. These are both fully already-construct (已构): total systems that appear to leave no remainder.
But when Street View's cameras swept the city, they photographed surfaces covered in numbers. Bus routes, price tags, building addresses, phone numbers, years, hours of operation—none of these were placed in the city to tell time. Yet a city is an ocean of numbers, and at every moment, some subset of them happens to match the current time. The spatial documentation project—with its purely geographic purpose—accidentally preserved the city's temporal remainder: not any one photograph, but the accumulated temporal content that lives, unremarked, inside the spatial archive. NYC Street Clock names this remainder as a timepiece.
The naming act is still 余项之美, not yet already-construct, because it has not been fully digested. The New York Times put it on their "Good List" in May 2026 but gave it no categorical name. It is not data visualization (too functional a framing), not street photography (the wrong direction of attention), not clock design (misses the conceptual core), not systems art (too academic a register). One signature of 余项之美 is being partly contained by several existing categories while not being fully claimed by any of them. The gap in naming is itself evidence that the remainder is still alive.
NYC Street Clock is a node in a coherent larger logic. First Light looks for stars discovered by computers but never seen by human eyes—the unwitnessed remainder of astronomical data collection. MNIST Histories is a work-in-progress recovering the identities of the 3,500 census workers and high school students who gave handwriting samples in 1989 to train the most canonical machine-learning dataset in existence—human remainder inside the most machine-processed construct. Traffic Cam Photobooth redirected a surveillance infrastructure toward personal expression, finding the individual remainder in the city's monitoring apparatus. In each case, the method is the same: a completed system, once closed, always leaves something behind. Kolman's work is the practice of collecting that surplus.
余项之美 asks us to see a remainder before it becomes construct. NYC Street Clock is still in the most interesting gap: simple enough that no existing theoretical frame can fully lock it down, poetic enough that any functional label diminishes it. See it now, before it gets absorbed into some tidy genre, before its remainder sediments into a new already-construct. The city has always been telling time by accident. It took a script and twenty thousand photographs to hear it.
