The Incompressible Remainder: Aleatoric11's Datamosh Music Video Maker

Han Qin (秦汉)

Aleatoric11 is the creative output of a New York-based independent musician and software developer — the name itself is a position statement. "Aleatoric" refers to the systematic introduction of chance into composition, the tradition that John Cage helped bring into serious musical discourse. On itch.io, the studio has released over a dozen browser-based tools: a synthesizer lab, a randomized sampler, a beat designer, an app for drifting through New York City via Google Street View, and the work under discussion here — the Datamosh Music Video Maker. All of them share a core logic: the artist sets parameters, and the system's remainder generates the content.

The tool runs entirely in the browser. You drag in video clips and an audio file; the system collapses them into a looping visual pile, responding in real time to bass, mids, and treble, while automatically applying datamosh-style effects — pixel jitter, randomized blend modes, VHS decay, feedback smear. Every playback is different. No presets, no keyframes, no correct output to aim for. The author states it plainly: the tool "is meant to feel less like software and more like a creative instrument you poke until something interesting happens." That something interesting is not planned. It grows from the cracks in the system.

Those cracks are precisely where the remainder lives. Datamosh, as a technique, exploits failure in video compression: when a codec cannot fully close the difference between frames, pixels overflow from one into the next — color bleeds, edges dissolve, motion leaves a trace on the image that has no clean name. The algorithm intended to erase this residue, but what it cannot erase is the source of datamosh aesthetics. Aleatoric11's tool systematizes that incompressible remainder as the primary creative material. The interface is designed as a container for remainder: the artist controls the conditions; chaos handles the content.

In SAE terms, this maps onto the chisel-construct cycle with precision. Glitch art as a category already has a Wikipedia entry, gallery placement, and critical language — it is, in meaningful respects, already-construct. Aleatoric11's tool has not arrived there. It is not a canonical instance of any named movement; it is a still-growing system, a tool ecosystem where each use activates new remainder within the cycle. Crucially, the author makes no claim to be making "art" at all — only "experimental browser-based tools." That incomplete self-naming is the sign that the remainder has not yet fully crystallized: it has no answer for what it belongs to.

Seeing this work now matters more than later for exactly this reason. Datamosh aesthetics have no stable critical vocabulary yet; "no-preset creation" as a design philosophy has no art-world framework; and Aleatoric11 as a multi-module creative ecology has not yet been touched by the institutions that would name it. This doesn't mean it necessarily will be named — some remainders dissolve rather than sediment. But it is precisely because this work is still in that uncertain, moving state that finding it now is what SAE judgment points toward: not recognizing known beauty, but recognizing the beauty of a remainder while it is still in motion.
