尤其值得注意的是:这种模式在此之前几乎只用于静止图像。在 Pouët 上有人写道:「我没见过这种模式被用于静止图片以外的地方。」正是这个未被充分展开的空间标志着它仍然是余项,而非已构。如果某个技术已被彻底发掘、充分演示,那它就成了工具箱里的一件构件;但 MCI 在运动中的潜力至今仍是一块尚未被充分开采的矿层。艺术界对此毫无概念。即使是 demo 社群,也只是刚刚开始意识到这片地形的存在。

还有一个时间维度:CRT 正在消失。这些「不可能的颜色」依赖于一种物理基底——阴极射线管磷光体的惰性——而这种基底本身正在退出历史。《Colors》所打开的美学余项,和它的物理载体共享同一个命运:窗口正在关闭。在 LCD 屏幕或模拟器上,你看到的只是闪烁;只有在真实的 CRT 上,你才能看到那些颜色真正地浮现。现在看这个 demo,看的是一个余项仍在活着的时刻。等到再过几年,也许它就只能作为一种历史记录被观看了。

The Commodore 64's color palette is one of the most exhaustively documented color systems in computing history. Since 1982, each of its 16 colors has been precisely characterized: voltage levels, PAL and NTSC variants, signal behavior of the VIC-II chip. The demoscene and retro-computing researchers have written thousands of pages about it. In every meaningful sense, the C64's colors are already-construct — their boundaries have long been measured, named, and filed away.

And yet Lethargy's demo Colors, released at X-Party 2026 in June, demonstrates something unsettling: those boundaries are not real. The demo uses Multicolor Interlaced (MCI) mode — rapidly alternating pixel states fast enough that the CRT's phosphor is caught between two colors. Because cathode ray tubes have physical inertia, phosphors don't switch instantly; they decay, they persist. In that decay, a seventeenth color appears, and an eighteenth, and a nineteenth — colors that officially do not exist in the C64's specification.

This is the precise structure of a remainder. The 16-color palette was a thorough chisel-act: the digital system fixed colors as discrete values and drew a boundary between the possible and the impossible. But the physical substrate refused to fully comply. Phosphors have their own sense of time; cathode rays have their own inertia. At the edges of the digital signal, analog physics left a space that had never been named. What Lethargy did was chisel into that space — to make the physical remainder into something inhabitable. Before you see Colors running on a real CRT, those colors technically do not exist. They live in the remainder of the specification, not in the specification itself.

What makes this still a living remainder rather than an already-construct is that this technique had almost never been used in motion before. A commenter on Pouët wrote: "I didn't see this kind of mode used for much else than still pictures before." That sentence marks the frontier. When a technique has been fully exploited and extensively demonstrated, it becomes a tool in the toolbox — construct. But the motion potential of MCI is still an unmined vein. The art world has no word for it. Even the demoscene is only beginning to understand the territory.

There is also a temporal dimension worth naming. CRTs are disappearing. The "impossible colors" depend on a physical substrate — cathode ray phosphor persistence — that is itself leaving history. The aesthetic space that Colors opens shares a fate with its physical medium: the window is closing. On an LCD or emulator, you see flicker; on a real CRT, you see those colors actually emerge. To watch this demo now is to watch a remainder while it is still alive. In a few more years, it may only be watchable as historical document.
