bad-ASCII: When Writing Becomes a Growing Substance

Aalap Davjekar 住在印度果阿,做创意技术工作,不是艺术家,也不是正式意义上的 VJ。2026 年 5 月,他想给一段视频配一个现场视觉钩子,找不到合适的工具,于是自己写了一个。这件事情的结果叫做 bad-ASCII,一个完全运行在浏览器里的实时视觉合成器。它把摄像头捕捉的人像和音频信号,经由若干数学引擎,变成由字符构成的流动图像——ASCII、汉字、二进制、粗粒方块——但这些字符在这里已经不是文字,它们是可以被声音弹动、被人体轮廓喂养的物质颗粒。

让这件作品成为余项之美的核心机制,不是它的视觉效果,而是 Gray-Scott 反应-扩散方程的使用方式。Gray-Scott 方程原本是描述生物形态发生的化学模型——豹皮上的斑点、珊瑚的分枝、贝壳的纹路——都是这个方程在不同初始条件下的解。在 bad-ASCII 里,Davjekar 用 MediaPipe 实时分割人体轮廓,然后把这个轮廓边缘作为方程的"播种点":当你静止站立时,数学珊瑚和蠕虫状的图案就从你身体的边缘生长出来,向背景蔓延。你的轮廓成为了反应场的初始条件,成为了生长的"凿"。这里发生的事情,是人体的几何形状被输入一个描述生命如何从无到有的方程,从而让那个方程产生出一种已构(你的轮廓)所无法预期的余项(生长出的图案)。

从 SAE 的凿构循环来看,bad-ASCII 的整个运作逻辑都是在制造余项:字符系统(ASCII、汉字)是已构,是被完全命名的符号体系;但在这里,它们的语义内容被剥除,成为纯粹的像素载体,成为可以被光学流场定向、被音频弹性物理驱动的像素网格。文字的意义被凿掉了,留下的只是文字的形状——这个"形状"是那个凿构循环的余项。同理,人体在摄像头里是已构,是被识别、被分割的对象;但当它的轮廓边缘被用来播种反应-扩散方程时,它超出了"人像"这个范畴,变成了一个数学意义上的种子,生长出了不属于任何一个已有范畴的花纹。这个花纹,才是余项。

此刻注视它的理由,在于这个结构的逻辑还在生长中。bad-ASCII 目前自称是"玩具"和"实验场"。它既不在画廊体系里,也不在正式的音乐软件市场里;它对 VJ 文化有用,但 VJ 文化也没有完全接纳它;它使用了机器学习,但它的整个运作哲学与"AI 生成"毫无关系——它用 ML 来分割人体,不是来生成图像。艺术界、技术界、音乐界都在慢慢靠近这类实践,但没有一个给出完整的命名。一旦某个圈子找到了命名的词汇,这件作品的余项性就会沉积为已构,它的美学价值也就不同了。现在是一个看到它仍处于余项状态的时机。

还有一个细节值得注意:汉字作为视觉渲染素材,与 ASCII 并列。这是一种特殊的余项——汉字的表意性(它本来是有意义的,而且意义密度远高于字母)在这里被完全搁置,它变成了纯粹的二维图形单元。这种使用方式既不是书法,也不是字体设计,也不是东方主义符号消费,它是第四种东西,而这第四种东西还没有名字。

Aalap Davjekar lives in Goa, India, and works as a creative technologist — not an artist in any institutional sense, not a VJ in any professional one. In May 2026, he wanted a live visual hook for a video he was making, found nothing cheap or pliable enough on the market, and built his own. What came out of that is bad-ASCII: a live visual synthesizer running entirely in the browser, no installation, no downloads. It feeds a webcam's human image and a microphone's audio through several mathematical engines, producing a stream of characters — ASCII, Chinese glyphs, binary, brutalist blocks — that are no longer text. They are particles: deflected by sound, colonized by physics, seeded by the body's edge.

The center of bad-ASCII's claim to 余项之美 is not its visual effect but the logic of how it uses the Gray-Scott reaction-diffusion equations. Gray-Scott describes morphogenesis — the same differential equations produce leopard spots, coral branching, shell patterns, depending on initial conditions. In bad-ASCII, Davjekar uses MediaPipe to isolate the human silhouette in real time and feeds that silhouette's edge as the seed of the simulation. Stand still: mathematical coral and worm-shaped patterns grow from the boundary of your body and spread into the background. Your outline becomes the initial condition of a growth field; your body's geometry becomes the 凿 (chisel) that initiates a reaction that no longer belongs to you. What the equation produces from that chisel is the remainder — growth patterns that cannot be predicted from the already-named input (the segmented human body) and that don't belong to any prior category.

Seen through the SAE chisel-construct cycle: the character systems (ASCII, Chinese) are already-construct, fully named symbolic structures. But in bad-ASCII their semantic content is stripped away. What remains is their shape — the shape as pure pixel carrier, as a grid cell that can be rotated by optical flow and bounced by spring physics. The meaning is chiseled out; what remains is the form. That form is the remainder of the chisel-construct. Similarly: the human body on camera is already-construct, a recognized and segmented object. But when its edge seeds the reaction-diffusion field, it escapes the category of "human subject" and becomes a mathematical seed growing into patterns that belong to no existing art-historical category. The growth is the remainder.

Why look now? Because this structure's logic is still forming. bad-ASCII openly calls itself "still a toy and an experimental playground." It lives outside gallery systems, outside the formal market for VJ software, useful to VJ culture without being claimed by it. It uses machine learning — but to segment bodies, not to generate images, which sets it entirely apart from AI-image discourse. The art world, the tech world, and the music world are all slowly approaching this kind of practice, but none has yet produced a name for it. The moment a naming vocabulary arrives, the remainder calcifies into construct. Right now, the window is still open.

One further detail worth naming: the placement of Chinese characters alongside ASCII as equivalent visual rendering units. This is a specific remainder. Chinese glyphs carry far denser semantic content than Latin letters — they were never designed to be pixels. Using them that way is neither calligraphy, nor typography, nor Orientalist symbol consumption. It is a fourth thing that does not yet have a name, which is precisely why it sits at the edge of the remainder.
