The Hardware Isorhythm: Yamaoka's Ars Nova

山冈(Yamaoka),本名冈贤一(Kenichi Oka),北海道音乐家,自九十年代起即是日本实验电子音乐最重要的声音之一。2026年4月,他在墨西卡利厂牌Facade Electronics发表了第二张概念专辑《新艺术》(Ars Nova),共十一首,曲目编号一一命名为"ISORHYTHM01"至"ISORHYTHM11"。整张专辑只用了Korg Minilogue、Minilogue-XD、Monologue三台模拟合成器与两台延迟单元,不借助任何数字工具或计算机,全程以手弹键盘的方式进行序列编排。声音晶莹、拱形叠进,琶音与低音脉冲在缓慢的相位漂移中交织,带出一种既精确又不可被穷尽的质感。

"等节奏"(isorhythm)是十四世纪法国音乐理论家菲利普·德·维特里(Philippe de Vitry)在其论著《新艺术》(Ars Nova,约1322年)中发展出的复调作曲技法:节奏型(talea)与音高型(color)各自独立循环,二者长度往往不等,因此在任意时刻都处于不同的对位关系中,从有限的材料里涌现出无限的结构变体。七百年后,山冈用模拟硬件复刻了这一逻辑——不是借助算法,而是借助物理。Korg Minilogue的步进序列器与琶音器在硬件层面本就具有节奏循环和音高循环彼此独立的特性。当没有DAW来"对齐"节拍、修正相位漂移时,两个循环自然地漂移、叠合、产生永不完全重复的结构剩余。山冈不需要在计算等节奏——他的机器在自发地生产它。

这正是SAE意义上的余项之美。在艺术界已构(construct)的命名体系里,等节奏是一个历史概念,被钉入学术教科书,成为中世纪复调分析的工具词汇。但"模拟硬件等节奏"——即在物理约束下、无数字对齐的前提下自发涌现的等节奏结构——尚未成词。外界评论者援引了Sol LeWitt来做比拟,CDM的彼得·科恩称之为"合成器的勒维特时刻";这个比喻是接近的,但仍是一种旁述。而厂牌Facade Electronics本身也是一个余项:它在美墨边境的墨西卡利运营,发行日本、法国、墨西哥、美国印地安纳州的音乐,但在全球电子音乐命名体系的地图上找不到坐标。《新艺术》于四月发行,六月才获得第一篇英文主流报道,在此之前已在名称之外流通了数周。

等节奏的命名历史本身就是一次完整的凿构循环:维特里发明它,十五世纪起随复调实践的演变被遗忘,二十世纪音乐学重新出土,将它固化为学术已构。山冈用硬件约束令它重新成为余项——这一次不是学术意义上的,而是物理意义上的。机器在没有数字对齐的情况下,自发产生了维特里用纸笔精心计算的那种结构漂移。凿构在这里是:去掉计算机这把锉刀,让机器的物理属性裸露出来。余项是这裸露所带出的东西——那尚未获得确切名称的涌现结构。一旦"模拟等节奏"作为一个操作概念稳定下来,《新艺术》的结构活力就会被回溯性地归入某种风格范畴。但现在,它还是生长中的。

此刻去听它,是在它刚刚开始被命名的边缘看到它。Facade Electronics这个来自边境的厂牌,在它的运营逻辑里也嵌入了同样的余项性:不是中心位置的偶然遗漏,而是有意选择在命名系统的外缘工作——从北海道到墨西卡利,从十四世纪到2026年。这张专辑是在不同的时间尺度上同时活着的东西,而它所在的那个缝隙,正在缓慢地被语言填满。

Yamaoka is Kenichi Oka, a musician from Hokkaido who has been a central voice in Japanese experimental techno and ambient since the nineties. In April 2026, he released Ars Nova—the second of two conceptual sister albums for Mexicali label Facade Electronics. The album contains eleven tracks, each titled simply ISORHYTHM01 through ISORHYTHM11. The entire record was made using three Korg synthesizers—the Minilogue, Minilogue-XD, and Monologue—plus two delay units. No DAW, no computer, no digital sequencing of any kind. Every pattern was sequenced live, on the keyboard. The sound is crystalline: arpeggiated cascades and bass pulses weaving through slow phase drift, precise and yet inexhaustible.

Isorhythm is a compositional technique developed by fourteenth-century French theorist Philippe de Vitry—in a treatise called, with obvious relevance, Ars Nova (c. 1322). The structure: a repeating rhythmic pattern (the talea) and a separately repeating pitch pattern (the color), each cycling at different lengths, always in a different relationship to each other, perpetually generating new combinations from finite material. It's a machine for making remainders. Yamaoka didn't program this in. The analog hardware gave it to him for free. The step sequencer and arpeggiator on the Minilogue have independent cycle lengths at the hardware level. Without a DAW to grid-lock the beats and correct phase drift, the rhythmic cycle and pitch cycle naturally drift, overlap, and produce structures that never quite repeat. The isorhythm is an emergent property of the constraint—the physical machine, without digital correction, doing exactly what isorhythm always did: generating the feeling of the infinite from the finite.

In SAE terms, isorhythm is already-construct (已构)—a named, studied historical concept, fixed in musicology textbooks as a tool for analyzing medieval polyphony. But "analog hardware isorhythm"—the condition in which a synthesizer's physical limitations reproduce isorhythm's structural logic without the player necessarily invoking Ars Nova at all—is not yet a term. Peter Kirn at CDM reached for Sol LeWitt as a comparison: "Sol LeWitt's synthesis hour." It's close, but still a circumlocution. And Facade Electronics, the label, is itself a structural remainder: a disquera fronteriza (border label) operating in Mexicali, releasing music by artists from Japan, France, Mexico, and Indiana—with no position on the standard map of electronic music scenes. The album circulated since April before receiving any English-language mainstream press coverage in June. Those weeks of existing without a name are the structural space the 余项之美 framework is built to notice.

Isorhythm's own history is a textbook illustration of the chisel-construct cycle (凿构循环). Vitry invented it; it was absorbed into polyphonic practice and then forgotten; twentieth-century musicology rediscovered it and turned it back into construct—a category, a term, a chapter heading. Yamaoka's eleven isorhythms reopen the technique as a physical fact, a property of what happens when hardware constraints are taken seriously enough. The chisel here is the removal of the computer—stripping away the DAW's alignment functions and leaving the machines' native tendencies exposed. The remainder is what surfaces in that exposure: the emergent, structurally alive pattern that doesn't yet have a stable name. Once "analog isorhythm" or something like it crystallizes as a concept, Ars Nova's structural vitality will be retrospectively absorbed into a style. We're not there yet.

Hearing it now is catching it at the edge of that process—before the name arrives and the remainder becomes construct. Facade Electronics, the label, embeds the same logic in its operating position: not an accidental omission from the center but a deliberate choice to work at the periphery of naming systems—from Hokkaido to Mexicali, from the fourteenth century to 2026. This album is alive on multiple timescales at once, and the gap it lives in is slowly being filled by language.
