Parameters of the Remainder: Dillon Bastan's BEAST Repeat and the Sounds With No Name Yet

Han Qin (秦汉)

BEAST Repeat is a free Max for Live device released by Dillon Bastan in July 2026. It begins with Ableton's built-in Beat Repeat — the classic plugin for rhythmic stutters, cuts, and repeats — and expands its parameter space to a startling degree. Not just more knobs, but a complete redesign of how repetition unfolds in time: stepped decay that can travel upward or downward across each successive repeat, spray that injects randomness into every grid setting, boomerang curves that make parameters arc back through a triangular distribution, FFT pitch shifting that preserves tempo while altering pitch, formant shifting with its own decay trajectory, an eight-slot snapshot system for morphing between states. Every parameter can decay independently, per-repeat. He took a known machine, carved into it, and left something that vastly exceeds the original's functional footprint.

Beat Repeat is already-construct. Its sounds have been named: beat stutter, IDM chop, rhythmic glitch, drum instability. Two decades of tutorials have built a stable grammar around it. That grammar is precisely the sign that the chisel-construct cycle has completed — the remainder existed once, in the gap between "loop a drum segment cleanly" and "something you couldn't predict"; now that gap is named, absorbed into style tags, and has become construct. Bastan's act is to reopen the gap. He does this not by rejecting Beat Repeat but by chiseling directly into its boundary — pulling its parameter space past the point where existing categories can follow.

What he opens is the remainder of the parameter space. When formant shifting steps upward across eight repeats while pitch boomerangs through a triangular distribution and spray randomizes the gate width per repeat — what is the sound that results? It isn't IDM. It isn't glitch. It isn't rhythmic repetition in any genre-nameable sense. Peter Kirn at CDM half-jokingly coined "beastiful," which is itself a symptom of the naming crisis. A real name hasn't arrived, but the sounds are already here. That gap — where the ear has reached but language has not — is precisely where the remainder lives.

Why discuss BEAST Repeat as something more than a functional tool? Because Bastan's broader practice has a systematic quality: he is consistently attacking the already-construct boundaries of music software. Swarmalators brought swarm-intelligence mathematics into synthesis — the resulting sounds have no genre name. Superposition brought Markov chains into multi-sampling — no genre name. Spectral Attractors brought strange attractors into spectral synthesis — no genre name. Each device is a chisel: it extends a stable musical construct (sampler, sequencer, effect) past its edge, and what lies beyond that edge is unnamed territory. BEAST Repeat is his clearest case yet, because its source material — Beat Repeat — is so thoroughly construct that the displacement into the remainder is especially legible by contrast.

Now is the time to look at this, because the naming pressure has already begun. Music tech media has covered it. Tutorial videos are being made. Producers will crystallize certain parameter combinations into presets, into personal aesthetics, into recognizable sounds. The remainder will eventually be absorbed into construct by the next turn of the chisel-construct cycle — this is inevitable. But at this moment the opened space is still open, still alive, still waiting for its names to arrive. To listen now is to hear the waiting itself.
