《Disparate》——
Disparate — Old-School Chisel Through New-School Graph
视觉由rhino主导——他用TiXL(一款开源节点图形工具,前身为Tooll,本身也起于德国demoscene)拼凑出整个场景,搭配自己的音乐。
pouet.net/prod.php?which=106430 ↗Torment is a UK-based demoscene group whose home platform is Atari — decades of craft laid down on 8- and 16-bit hardware, accumulated across more productions than most people will ever count. At the Nova 2026 party in Budleigh Salterton, England, this "resolutely old-school crew" submitted their first new-school PC demo: Disparate. Visuals were assembled by rhino — who composed the music and, for the first time, reached for TiXL (an open-source node-based motion graphics tool, successor to Tooll, itself rooted in the German demoscene) to build the scenes. "I'd written the tune and had also been trying out a few things in TiXL," rhino wrote afterwards, "so I thought I'd better try and put the two things together."
The response from the party floor was immediate and pointed. One veteran scener: "This is too strong for a PC firstie! Get back in your box!" Another: "Who knew TiXL could produce colour?" Both remarks, placed side by side, are gesturing toward the same thing — something appeared here that shouldn't have, by any default expectation. An old-school group making their first PC demo is supposed to produce the evidence of unfamiliarity: wrong tools, wrong habits, wrong rhythms. Disparate did none of that. It carried a solid tactile quality, a restraint that felt chiseled out of something — out of Atari hardware years.
This is where the remainder sits. Torment's aesthetic DNA — old-school restraint, the precise feel for timing that comes from living inside platform constraints for years, the instinct for visual density — arrived intact inside a tool it had never touched before. The result is not "a beginner PC demo." It is something occupying a threshold between two traditions, where old-school chiseling flows through new-school operator graphs. The demoscene community sensed it without knowing how to name it. TiXL itself is at a structural growth point: version 4.1 just released, the first in-person Berlin workshop still months away, sceners from increasingly different traditions picking it up for the first time. What happens when old-school makers adopt new-school tools? The grammar of that question isn't written yet.
In SAE terms: the chisel in this chisel-construct cycle is the entire Atari catalogue; the construct is forming but not yet solid. The old-school aesthetic sensibility, freed from hardware constraints, still knows who it is — but what that "knowing who it is" actually consists of, whether it's style or instinct or some non-linguistic transmission of accumulated history, no one has fully said. The art world has no view of the demoscene at all. Even within the scene itself, this particular question doesn't yet have a category. That gap — between what the work does and what anyone can yet say about it — is where the structural aliveness lives.
Disparate is still the beauty of the remainder because this crossing point is too new. In a few years, when more old-school groups have moved across this threshold, people will begin to discuss what old-school aesthetics meeting new-school tools actually means — and then those questions will have become the vocabulary of the already-construct. Now is the moment to see it happening, before it gets named.
