Kuro Kasetto:
Kuro Kasetto: The Remainder Between Strike and Resonance
自我介绍只有一行:Someone having fun making little sounds。
kurokasetto.bandcamp.com ↗Kuro Kasetto is an artist from Mexico who makes music by having solenoids — electromagnetic actuators — physically strike real acoustic instruments: a xylophone, a kalimba. The setup is specific: five solenoids receive MIDI signals via Arduino, the MIDI generated by the Bloom script running on a Norns Shield, a generative, constantly shifting rhythmic algorithm; the acoustic result passes through a Chase Bliss MOOD MKII pedal for real-time texture. The music is ambient in the truest sense, resisting grids and song structures, floating in something that Peter Kirn described today on CDM as "more flora than machine, as if it's floated in on a breeze." The artist's self-description is one line: Someone having fun making little sounds.
Two already-constructs have hardened by 2026. First: the robotic percussion tradition — Conlon Nancarrow's player pianos, Pat Metheny's Orchestrion, every MIDI robotic drum rig — built entirely on precision. The machine does what humans cannot: superhuman speed, regularity, complexity. A solenoid in this tradition is a precision instrument; it eliminates human error. Second: ambient music as genre, sedimented from Eno's Music for Airports to the AI-generated present. In 2026, this second construct completed its final brick: describe a mood, large model outputs atmosphere, end of conversation. Both constructs are closing from opposite ends, leaving a gap in the middle.
The chisel removes precision as the goal — without replacing it with human imprecision. Kuro Kasetto's machines are "on the very edge of working." Mechanical unreliability becomes the instrument itself. The chisel-construct cycle unfolds here in an atypical form: Bloom script generates MIDI patterns → solenoid translates them into mechanical strikes → the acoustic body of the xylophone or kalimba responds with its own resonance, damping, overtone structure. Three layers, each with its own logic, none fully controlling the others. The digital precision dissolves into material volume.
The remainder lives in the gap between strike and resonance — the spring-return clatter of the solenoid mechanism, the overtone bloom from a strike that was slightly too hard, the sustain that fades differently each time because the physical world does not hold still. This is not sampling (the sound is live, not pre-recorded), not synthesis (there is a real xylophone bar), not drum machine (there is no fixed loop). It is a specific sound quality that only emerges when the solenoid's mechanical timing meets the acoustic instrument's material unpredictability. "More flora than machine" is a paradox, not a category name. The category does not yet exist: not "robotic music" (that requires precision), not "ambient music" (that is produced, arranged, finished), not "electroacoustic" (that is a European academic tradition), not "sound art" (that lives in galleries). "Tiny sounds" is Kuro's own descriptor — a feeling, not a category.
Today, July 24, 2026, is CDM's first major English-language coverage of Kuro Kasetto. Kirn notes that Instagram posts are "making the rounds in my circle" — the community discovery phase, not yet naming. AI music generation is absorbing "generative ambient" into a single formula; once sealed, the specific practice of making generative music through DIY mechanical apparatus becomes a historical footnote rather than a living remainder. Now is the time to see it. Its logic is still evolving: different instruments (xylophone, kalimba), different apparatus configurations, Patreon still active. No name yet. Still a remainder.
