For the first time, a performer could govern sound without touching any instrument. That research became Interactor (co-developed with Subotnick: a graphic programming environment for real-time media control in live performance), and then became Isadora — named after the dancer Isadora Duncan — the interactive media performance software at the core of Troika Ranch, the NYC dance/theater group Coniglio co-founded with choreographer Dawn Stoppiello, now based in Berlin. On July 14, 2026, Isadora 4.5 arrived: for the first time, audio is fully native in Isadora's interactive logic. Multichannel audio I/O, VST3 plugins with interactive real-time control, a programmable audio routing matrix, Actors that watch audio level and frequency and transcribe speech — all the infrastructure that previously lived only inside a DAW is now governed by Isadora's condition-based performance logic.
Isadora's entire architecture is a chisel applied to the most naturalized assumption in digital audio: the DAW timeline. The default shape of digital sound is a horizontal ruler — events placed on it, then rendered and exported. Even "live" electronic performance tools (Ableton Live) maintain the timeline as their organizing substrate. Isadora refuses this logic entirely. Its organizing principle is not timeline but scene and condition: "when the sensor reads this value, trigger this Actor"; "when this scene ends, enter the next." Not "compose, then play" but "build conditions, then perform." The performer's body is the conductor; all media is a response to what the body does. There is a specific word for this: dramaturgy — the structural grammar of performance itself, not of the production pipeline.
Before 4.5, even Isadora users needed a separate DAW running alongside for audio. Sound lived in DAW-timeline logic; visuals lived in Isadora's condition logic; they communicated via OSC or MIDI but were never genuinely one thing. Version 4.5 chisels that split away: sound is now directly governed by performance conditions, VST3 plugins can be controlled by Actors in real time, audio routing can be rewritten programmatically mid-performance. This is a structural moment. The remainder here is the territory where dance and sound are genuinely one thing — the same interactive logic, the same conditions, the same body-driven grammar governing image and sound simultaneously. This territory has existed since MidiDancer in 1989. It was never named. Audio production culture doesn't include choreography or dramaturgy; theater and dance culture uses Isadora but is invisible to music tech discourse. The remainder isn't absent — it's present but without an address.
In 2026, AI creative tools are closing the available imagination space around a single formula: describe → generate content. Isadora is the structural opposite: not description but responsive conditions; not generation but performance. Peter Kirn's CDM article puts it plainly: "It's the opposite of the current world of AI, because it says the open-ended generative powers of the computer are something you can use live — to play." TouchDesigner (Derivative, VC-backed, deep Nvidia AI integration) is absorbing the interactive visual performance space; Isadora maintains independence and a distinct philosophy rooted in dramaturgy rather than data flow. The naming gap is at maximum width: Kirn describes Isadora 4.5 as "an interactive, nonlinear host that responds to performance" — five words he invented because the category doesn't exist. Not a DAW (no timeline). Not a VJ tool (not visuals-first). Not Max/Pd (not an instrument-building environment). Not a media server (not playback-only). Not TouchDesigner (not data-driven installation logic). Each description is a negation.
Isadora is named after a dancer, not an algorithm, not a software category. That choice alone signals where this territory begins: from the body, not from the system. It's worth seeing now rather than later, because the remainder is most visible before naming arrives.
