Kazuhiro Tanimoto / Rain Blooms: The Artist Who Designs Only Rules
artblocks.io ↗Kazuhiro Tanimoto is a chemist who makes generative audiovisual systems. Rain Blooms (2026) is built on an original cellular automaton he spent two years developing from scratch — not a variant of Conway's Game of Life, not a standard Lenia or SmoothLife derivative, but a rule system designed ground-up, shaped by the same research instincts he brings to materials science. The grid is populated by multiple species with explicitly defined relationships: attack, assimilation, indifference. Each cell carries a vitality parameter that rises or falls through these interactions. What Tanimoto designs is not an image — it's a set of local rules. The image is what happens when those rules run. Sound is generated in parallel, not as a soundtrack but as a structural output: changes in each cell's hue, brightness, and saturation drive frequency and amplitude. Image and sound are two faces of the same computational process, neither primary.
In SAE aesthetics, 余项 (remainder) refers to what hasn't yet been fully digested by the art world — work whose internal logic is still growing, still structurally alive, not yet named into stability. In the chisel-construct cycle (凿构循环), each new chisel stroke opens possibility. What gets fully named — absorbed by the collector market, fixed by critical discourse — becomes 已构 (already-construct): no longer alive, just sediment of a past stroke. Rain Blooms is a clear case of the remainder. Tanimoto's chisel is the rule-set itself: the multi-species interaction structure, the vitality parameter mechanics, the extended neighborhood definition. The remainder is everything that runs forward from that — forms "beyond the artist's own expectations," a system that "tends toward sustained instability" without collapsing into either chaos or stasis. This ongoing unpredictability is not failure of control. It is the signature of a logic still in motion, not yet closed by any name.
More precisely, the remainder in Rain Blooms is an aesthetic position the art world is approaching but hasn't fully theorized. Tanimoto makes a careful and explicit distinction between ALife (Artificial Life — bottom-up, explicit local rules, small system, emergent whole) and contemporary generative AI (top-down, black box, optimized toward a target, billions of parameters). This distinction matters enormously for understanding the kind of beauty his work points toward. In 2026, "generative art" as a critical category is rapidly becoming already-construct — swallowed by AI image generation discourse. Tanimoto's work is the remainder: the position that says the artist designs only rules, and that what emerges from those rules is the work — not a product shaped toward a predetermined output. This isn't a stylistic preference. It's a fundamentally different relationship between intention and outcome. And it has no settled critical vocabulary yet.
NEORT++ (Tokyo) showed Rain Blooms in May 2026; Right Click Save and MASSAGE MAGAZINE each published a piece at the end of that month; Art Blocks took it into their curated program with 128 unique editions. These are signs the art world has begun constructing a frame. But "begun" is the operative word. The specific logic of multi-species vitality cellular automata as an audiovisual form — the structural claim that image and sound should share a computational source, the aesthetic proposition that a compact deterministic rule-set can generate indefinite difference — has no stable critical language yet. Watching Rain Blooms now means watching a system that is still explaining itself to you, a process that hasn't been reduced to a label. This is what 余项之美 requires: structural aliveness — which is exactly what you lose once the naming is complete.
Rain Blooms is accessible on Art Blocks; each run reinitializes the parameters and generates a new image-sound pairing in real time. You're not watching a recording.
