Erik Söderberg (EKSS — Ekssperimental Sounds Studios) has been a Reason user since version 1.0 shipped in 2000. He is a graphic designer by training, has no formal coding background, and since 2017 has been building a one-man catalog of Rack Extensions — synthesizers, effects, sequencers — for the Reason platform. In June 2026, he released FreakShift: a Bode-style frequency shifter combined with a ring modulator, paired with an envelope follower and LFO, its back panel dense with CV jacks that let it connect by virtual patch cable to any other device in the Reason rack.

The fundamental difference between a Rack Extension and a VST plug-in is the back panel. The plug-in format is built on a single assumption: that each device is an isolated unit — audio in, audio out, MIDI in, knobs up front, GUI overhead. No device talks to its neighbor without going through a host DAW's routing layer. This isolation is not a limitation — it is the shape of the construct, the sedimented agreement of thirty years of plug-in development. What the Rack Extension format chisels away is precisely this isolation: every device has actual CV jacks on its back panel, and any device can connect directly to any other. FreakShift's carrier input can come from a synthesizer sitting beside it. Its frequency shift amount can be driven in real time by a step sequencer's CV output. Its LFO depth can respond to a drum machine's envelope follower. This is not routing through a host layer. This is wiring.

What emerges from this wiring paradigm has no name. Peter Kirn, reviewing EKSS on CDM in June 2026, circles around it: "the unique space [Reason Rack] inhabits between modular and software studio"; "far more integrated than a plug-in"; "more like full-featured hardware than you'd get from modules in Eurorack-style environments." Each phrase approaches the thing without landing on it. The CV-patchable software rack — neither plug-in nor hardware module, neither purely virtual nor physically embodied — is the remainder. The back panel has been there since Reason 1.0. But it has never been named as a category, because it has only ever had one habitat: Reason. It is a synthesis paradigm that exists exclusively inside one DAW's software architecture, and no word has settled on it yet.

Erik's own disposition keeps the territory unnamed. He says he looks more backward than forward. His first Rack Extension was inspired by a single knob on King Tubby's mixing console — a sweep filter that turned into HighPass Filter 1012. His favorite instruments are a RE-303 and a Syncussion SY-1, both built from DIY kits he soldered himself. FreakShift's Bode frequency shifting circuit comes from 1970s DIY electronics traditions; running it inside a CV-patchable software rack where it can simultaneously talk to every other device in real time is a combination no synthesis category has absorbed. Erik is not naming the territory. He is working inside it, building the next device.

In 2026, Reason Studios was acquired by LANDR. LANDR's core business is AI-assisted music production and distribution. Under this acquisition, Reason's commercial incentives will almost certainly push toward subscription streaming packs, AI mastering, and broad compatibility with mainstream workflows — not toward maintaining the infrastructure for a small, proprietary Rack Extension format whose creative possibilities are, at this moment, still growing. Erik says he is "curious to see what SDK5 will bring" and "whether developers find some luck with it." That word "luck" is the structural signal. FreakShift exists inside this window: the territory between plug-in and module, CV cables still live, naming still incomplete, but the window perhaps shorter than the architecture deserves.
