Sonic Charge 的 Synplant 是一台以"基因"作为界面隐喻的合成器。它没有传统的旋钮阵列,没有参数标签,只有一张可以点击生长、点击变异的种子界面。合成器在这里被设计成:你听到声音,你让它变异,你不命名它。这是 Magnus Lidström 刻意做出的设计——一个运行了二十余年的声音哲学:基因型(genotype)在参数层里,表现型(phenotype)在耳朵里,语言不在场。

Synplant is a synthesizer built around a genetic metaphor. There are no labeled knobs, no parameter names — just a seed that grows, mutates, and branches. The interface is deliberately prelinguistic: you listen, you evolve, you don't name. Magnus Lidström built this as a philosophy, not just a design choice. For over twenty years, Synplant operated by this logic: the genotype lives in the parameters, the phenotype lives in your ears, and language stays out.

In June 2026, he released PhenoType — a free extension for Synplant 2. You type a description in plain language ("slow pad modulation reverb," "dark and grainy," "cats in space"), press execute, and within seconds you receive a fully editable Synplant patch as a starting point — ready to continue evolving in the gene editor. This is not audio output, not a preset search. It is the first time Synplant's internal vocabulary has ever been touched by language.

In SAE aesthetics, 余项 (the remainder) is what the chisel-construct cycle leaves behind — what hasn't yet been fully named or digested. Synplant's design was itself a chisel: it removed the linguistic layer from synthesis (knob names, parameter labels, sound categories), leaving an instrument navigable only by ear and mutation. That became the construct — a deliberately mute instrument. But chiseling away the language layer doesn't mean the vocabulary ceases to exist. Synplant 2's parameter space has always carried an internal map, a topology of how its sounds relate to each other, a semantic structure waiting to be named. It just never was. That's the remainder: the phenotypic space of the synthesizer — the full range of what it can produce, organized by perceptual relationships that existed in the parameters long before any word was ever attached.

Magnus didn't reach for a large language model. He labeled 60,000 patches by hand — himself — building roughly 200 tags and 1,000 synonyms, then packaged the result as a small local JavaScript engine that runs inside the plugin with no internet required. This move simultaneously chisels the hardening construct of "AI audio = large cloud model" and makes its remainder the tool itself: one person's exhaustive naming of one instrument's world. PhenoType is therefore a double remainder. First: the linguistic map of Synplant 2's parameter space, which always existed but was never drawn. Second: the alternative to the large-model paradigm — small, local, instrument-specific semantic knowledge — which the cloud-AI construct is actively absorbing. Magnus himself says the vocabulary has "obvious holes" (music genres, exotic instruments). The dictionary is still being written. The remainder is still alive.

The naming gap here is unusually precise. PhenoType is not AI audio generation (no big model, no cloud). It's not a preset browser (it generates new patches, not searches existing ones). It's not a randomizer (it has directional semantic intent). It's not text-to-audio (it returns editable parameters, not rendered sound). Magnus chose the word "PhenoType" — a biology term, not a software category. In genetics, the phenotype is the observable, nameable expression of the underlying genotype. He named the tool after what it reveals: the nameable surface of a synthesizer's parameter space that was always there, never surfaced. The software category for what PhenoType actually is does not yet exist. Seeing it now means seeing the remainder in motion — still unfinished, still naming itself, still precisely alive.
